Newark Bin Help Without Guesswork
Use this guide to check your bin day, understand green, silver, teal-lid glass and brown bins, fix a missed collection, and choose the right route for bulky, garden, food or extra waste.
Every section gives a direct answer first, then the action. Official links are placed only after the useful detail, so you know exactly why you are clicking.
Quick answer: Newark and Sherwood collects household waste every two weeks, recycling every two weeks, glass every eight weeks, and garden waste every two weeks from March to November. Garden waste drops to every four weeks from December to February.
Most important rule: leave bins at the front of your property and on the pavement by 6am, unless the Council has told you to use another place. Waste must be inside the bin and the lid must be closed.

Bin day and put-out rules
Most Newark bin problems start before the lorry arrives. These are the rules to check first.
| User question | Newark & Sherwood answer | Best action |
|---|---|---|
| When should bins be out? | By 6am on collection day. | Put bins out the evening before if your road is collected early. |
| Where should bins go? | At the front of the property and on the pavement, unless told otherwise. | Keep the bin visible, safe, and not blocking access. |
| How often is household waste collected? | Every two weeks. | Use the green or black wheeled bin for non-recyclable household waste only. |
| How often is recycling collected? | Every two weeks. | Use the silver wheeled bin for clean, dry, loose recyclables. |
| How often is glass collected? | Every eight weeks. ROB glass recycling boxes are collected every two weeks. | Use the silver bin with teal lid or ROB box where provided. |
| How often is garden waste collected? | Every two weeks; every four weeks from December to February. | Use only if you have paid for the brown-bin service. |
| Can extra waste be left beside the bin? | No. Waste not in the bin is not collected. | Use bulky waste, garden recycling, recycling centre or another proper route. |
What goes in each Newark bin
Use this as the fast sorting table. The “do not include” column is what prevents rejected bins.
| Container | Put in | Do not put in | Helpful detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green or black wheeled bin General household waste |
Non-recyclable household waste that cannot go in recycling, glass or garden waste. | Soil, bricks, concrete, tyres, car parts, rubble, stones, paints, oils, solvents, bathroom/kitchen fittings, batteries and vapes. | Lid must be closed. Large items need bulky waste booking, not the green bin. |
| Silver wheeled bin Recycling |
Paper, card, cartons, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays, tubes, tins, cans, aerosols, clean foil, foil trays, metal lids and aluminium tubes/bottles. | Glass, pizza boxes, fish/chip paper, black plastics, crisp packets, pouches, food waste, polystyrene, bubble wrap, bags, cling film, shredded paper, nappies, toys and textiles. | Everything should be empty, clean, dry and loose. Do not use plastic bags. |
| Silver bin with teal lid Glass recycling |
Food jars, drink bottles, toiletry jars, perfume bottles and reed diffuser bottles. | Pyrex, mirrors, drinking glasses, vases, nail varnish bottles, window/greenhouse glass, microwave plates, spectacles, bulbs and tubes. | Empty and clean glass. Remove plastic lids/seals where possible. Metal lids can stay attached. |
| Brown bin Paid garden waste |
Grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, small branches/twigs up to 10cm, plants, weeds, cut flowers and small amounts of soil. | Plastic pots, seed trays, liners, bags of any type, animal waste, bedding, food waste, peelings, treated wood, Japanese knotweed and large amounts of soil. | Only use it if you have paid for garden waste collections. |
| Batteries Kerbside battery route |
Domestic batteries including 9v, AA, AAA, C, D, button, laptop and power-tool batteries. | Car batteries, mobility scooter batteries or batteries still inside appliances. | Put domestic batteries in a tied bag on top of the bin on collection day. |
Missed bin collection Newark: decision tree
Do not report too early. Newark and Sherwood says to wait until after 3pm on collection day because the crew may still return.
Contaminated or rejected bin: what to do
A contaminated bin is usually a sorting issue, not a missed collection. Fix the cause before expecting the next collection.
| Bin | Why it may be rejected | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Green/black general waste bin | Concrete, construction material or large amounts of soil can make it too heavy. | Remove heavy/incorrect material and take it to the correct recycling centre or disposal route. |
| Silver recycling bin | Non-recyclable items, bagged recycling, food waste, black plastics, nappies, glass or dirty materials. | Report it as contaminated if instructed, leave the bin out, and the Council says it will be collected as general waste within five working days. |
| Brown garden waste bin | Non-garden waste, bags, liners, animal waste, food waste, treated wood or invasive plants. | Remove the wrong items and use the garden bin only for accepted garden waste. |
| Glass recycling bin | Pyrex, mirrors, drinking glasses, bulbs, window glass or other heat-resistant/non-bottle glass. | Use general waste or a recycling centre route for unsuitable glass items. |

Final practical advice
For Newark refuse collection, the fastest routine is: check the exact property, put the right bin out by 6am, close the lid, keep waste inside the bin, keep silver recycling clean and loose, and wait until after 3pm before reporting a missed collection.
If the item does not belong in a normal bin, use the right route: garden recycling, bulky waste booking, recycling centre, replacement bin request, assisted collection or food waste trial guidance.
