RBWM Bin Help Without Guesswork

Use this guide to check your collection day, understand black rubbish, blue recycling, food waste, green garden waste, large items, small electricals, batteries and missed-bin rules across the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead.

It is built for quick scanning: choose your problem, read the exact action, then use the official RBWM link only when it is the right route.

Quick answer: use RBWM’s official bin day finder for your exact address. It shows recycling, food waste, rubbish and subscribed garden waste dates. Blue recycling and food waste are collected weekly; rubbish frequency can depend on your property type and collection setup.

Most important rule: put bins and food waste at the front boundary by 7am on collection day, no earlier than the night before. Keep black rubbish inside the bin with the lid closed.

Bin day and the 7am rule

RBWM collection setup can differ between normal houses, communal properties, roads with sacks and subscribed garden waste addresses. Always check your exact address.

Question Exact answer Do this
How do I check my collection day? Use the official RBWM bin collection day finder. Enter your postcode/address and check each service separately.
What does the finder show? Recycling, food waste, rubbish and garden waste if you subscribe. Do not assume garden waste appears unless subscription is active.
What time should bins be out? By 7am on collection day. Put bins out the night before if your road is collected early.
How early can I put bins out? RBWM says no earlier than the night before for holiday guidance. Do not leave bins out for days before collection.
Where should bins go? At the front boundary of your property where crews can see them. Keep access clear, especially on narrow roads and shared drives.
What if a bank holiday changes the date? Check the holiday collection dates page or bin day finder. Use the revised day rather than the normal weekday.
Local tip: In Windsor town centre, Maidenhead terraces, Ascot lanes and village roads, blocked access can cause real collection problems. Put bins where crews can see them, but do not block footpaths, gates or parked-car access.

RBWM waste system: black, blue, food and garden bins

This table answers the main search intent: which container, what goes in it, and the mistake that stops collection.

Service How it works Main mistake to avoid
Black rubbish bin Household rubbish that cannot be recycled, contained inside the bin with lid closed. No overflowing rubbish, no waste on top, no waste beside the bin.
Blue recycling bin Weekly recycling for everyday food and drink packaging, clean paper/card, plastic bottles, tins, foil, cartons and glass bottles/jars. Do not put batteries, food waste, bubble wrap, polystyrene, nappies, clinical waste or hard plastics inside.
Outdoor food waste bin Weekly food waste collection from the front boundary by 7am. Keep packaging, liquids, oil and non-food items out.
Green garden waste bin Subscribed fortnightly garden waste service. Garden waste must be loose; no sacks, bags or bin liners.
Small electricals One small carrier bag on top of or beside your recycling bin on collection day. Do not put small electricals loose inside the recycling or rubbish bin.

Missed bin decision tree

Use this before reporting. It prevents the most common wrong reports: wrong date, wrong bin, contamination, side waste or a bank holiday change.

Was it the correct collection day?
No → use the official finder. Check recycling, food waste, rubbish and subscribed garden waste separately.
Was it out by 7am?
No → it may not count as missed. Put it out correctly next time.
Was black rubbish inside the bin only?
No → RBWM will not collect rubbish overflowing, on top of or beside the bin.
Was recycling contaminated?
Remove wrong items such as batteries, nappies, food waste, polystyrene, hard plastics or clinical waste.
Was it garden waste?
Check active subscription, closed lid, loose material only, and no soil, compost bags or non-garden waste.
Was there a bank holiday or disruption?
Check holiday dates and council updates before reporting as missed.
Still genuinely missed?
Use RBWM’s official missed-bin report page after checking the rules above.
Report smarter: include the service missed — black rubbish, blue recycling, food waste or garden waste — plus your address, correct collection date and whether the bin was out by 7am.

Blue recycling bin rules

RBWM blue recycling is broad, but it still needs to be clean. If food residue or wrong items go in, the bin may not be emptied until you remove them.

Yes — blue bin No — keep out Useful action
Aerosol cans, aluminium foil, foil trays, drinks cans and food cans. Batteries, car batteries and battery packs. Use battery recycling routes instead.
Plastic bottles with lids, plastic trays, yoghurt pots, butter/margarine tubs. Bubble wrap, crisp packets, pet food packaging and polystyrene. Empty, rinse and squash containers.
Cardboard, cartons, Tetrapak cartons, catalogues, directories, junk mail, magazines, newspapers and paper. Packaging tape, dirty food packaging, disposable takeaway cups and flower pots. Break down cardboard and remove tape where possible.
Glass bottles and jars including lids. Light bulbs, hard plastics, furniture, homeware and DIY waste. Use Stafferton Way HWRC for suitable non-kerbside items.
Books, envelopes, wrapping paper without foil or glitter, small amounts of shredded paper. Nappies, wipes, clinical waste and food waste. Keep recycling dry, clean and not mixed with hygiene waste.
Space tip: RBWM says to empty, rinse and squash. Squashed bottles and flattened boxes create much more space in the blue bin. If it still overflows, request another recycling bin.
Cardboard tip: RBWM says you can place one flattened cardboard box next to your recycling bin if your bin is overflowing.

Black rubbish bin rules

The black bin is only for household rubbish that cannot be recycled. RBWM is strict on lids and side waste.

Use black rubbish for

  • Non-recyclable household rubbish.
  • Non-infectious hygiene waste such as sanitary and incontinence waste.
  • PPE such as gloves, aprons and masks.
  • Items that are not suitable for blue-bin recycling, food waste or garden waste.

Do not use black rubbish for

  • Recycling that belongs in the blue bin.
  • Food waste that belongs in the food waste bin.
  • Garden waste if you use the green garden service or HWRC.
  • Electricals, batteries, hot ashes, fireworks or hazardous waste.
  • Rubbish on top of or beside the bin.
No side waste: RBWM says it only collects household rubbish inside the bin with the lid closed. Overflowing rubbish, waste on top of the bin or beside the bin is not collected.

Weekly food waste collection

Food waste is collected weekly. It goes to anaerobic digestion, where it can produce renewable heat/power and fertiliser digestate.

Food waste task RBWM rule Common mistake
Using a kitchen caddy Indoor caddies are not supplied, but you can use a shop-bought caddy or reuse a tub/container. Do not wait for an indoor caddy from the council.
Lining the caddy Line your indoor caddy/container with any plastic or paper bag. Do not leave loose food in your indoor caddy if that makes it harder to empty.
Moving to outdoor bin Tie the bag and place it in your outdoor food bin. Do not put packaging into the food bin.
Collection point Place the outdoor food caddy at the front boundary by 7am every week. Do not hide it behind the larger bins.
Outdoor bin lock Keep the outdoor bin locked using the lockable handle. Unlocked caddies can attract pests or spill.
No bag option You can place food waste loose in the outdoor caddy. If loose, clean it regularly to stop waste sticking to the bottom.

Yes — food caddy

  • Bread, cakes, pastries, cereals, rice and pasta.
  • Beans, pulses, cheese, small amounts of butter or lard.
  • Eggs and eggshells.
  • Plate scrapings and out-of-date food without packaging.
  • Fruit, vegetables, peelings, cores and stones.
  • Pet food, raw/cooked fish and meat, skin and bones.
  • Tea bags, tea leaves, coffee grounds and paper coffee filters.

No — food caddy

  • Packaging of any kind.
  • Liquids such as milk.
  • Oil or liquid fat.
  • Any material that is not food waste.
  • Garden waste.
  • General rubbish or recyclables.

Green garden waste subscription

Garden waste is not ordinary rubbish. RBWM offers a subscribed green garden waste service with fortnightly collections.

Garden waste point RBWM detail User action
Subscription length Your subscription runs for one year from the date of your first collection. Check your start date and renewal date.
Collection frequency Green garden bins are collected once a fortnight, with changes during bank holidays. Check the bin finder and holiday dates.
How waste should be placed All materials should be loose in the bin. Do not use sacks, bags or bin liners.
Lid rule Green bin lids need to be closed for emptying. Cut material down if the lid will not close.
New bin delivery Collection will not be made the same week your new bin is delivered. Expect the first collection in the first or second full week after delivery.
Bank holidays Garden waste may be collected on an alternative advised day. Use the collection day page before putting it out.
Soil or compost bags Items such as soil and non-accepted garden materials should go to Stafferton Way HWRC. Do not contaminate the green garden bin.

Accepted garden waste examples

  • Weeds except Japanese Knotweed.
  • Grass cuttings, plants, leaves and hedge trimmings.
  • Christmas trees, cut up and placed inside the bin.
  • Loose garden material that fits with the lid closed.

Do not put in green garden bin

  • Soil, compost and gardening material bags.
  • Plant pots, tubs and trays.
  • Sacks, plastic bags or bin liners.
  • Food waste or general household rubbish.
Practical tip: if you prune heavily in Windsor, Maidenhead, Ascot or village gardens, cut branches down before collection day. A lid that will not close can stop emptying.

Reuse tip: if furniture, toys or electricals still work, try Freegle, local marketplace groups, charity reuse or RBWM “Rehome” advice before paying for disposal.

Small electricals, batteries, textiles and tricky items

Do not hide electricals, batteries or reusable textiles in the black bin. RBWM has better kerbside and reuse routes.

Item type Correct RBWM route Do not do this
Small electrical items Put one small carrier bag of electrical items on top of or alongside your recycling bin on collection day. Do not put electricals loose inside the blue or black bin.
Cables and plugs They can be attached to the small electrical items. Do not cut cables off unless required for safety.
Large electrical items Use Stafferton Way HWRC or chargeable large item collection if suitable. Do not place large appliances on top of the recycling bin as “small electricals”.
Batteries Use proper battery recycling routes; keep them out of blue-bin recycling and black rubbish. Do not put batteries or battery packs in the blue bin.
Old clothes and textiles Arrange a kerbside collection or use reuse/recycling routes where suitable. Do not put reusable textiles into black rubbish if they can be reused.
Inhalers / medicine blister packs / insulin pens Use pharmacy or specialist take-back routes listed by RBWM. Do not put inhalers in normal bins.

New, damaged and extra bins or caddies

Use this when a container is missing, damaged or not large enough for your household.

Need RBWM rule Best action
Missing refuse, recycling or outdoor food bin You can order a new bin or outdoor food caddy. Use the official “Order a new bin or caddy” route.
Damaged bin Leave it at your usual collection point, front edge of property/boundary, clearly visible, so it can be repaired or removed when the new bin is delivered. Report the damage and leave it visible.
Damaged outdoor food caddy Place it into your black refuse bin or take it to Stafferton Way HWRC. Order a replacement outdoor caddy.
Delivery timing RBWM aims to deliver new and replacement bins/caddies within 10 working days. Do not expect same-day delivery.
More than one black rubbish bin RBWM is unable to supply more than one 180L black rubbish bin per property. Use recycling, food waste and Stafferton Way before asking for capacity help.
Larger black bin Only provided to households of six or more, five or more with a baby under two in nappies, or those with a medical need. Apply only if you meet the criteria.
Extra recycling capacity You can request another recycling bin if your blue bin still overflows after squashing and flattening items. Request recycling capacity before putting recyclables into black rubbish.
Capacity tip: if your black bin is full every collection, audit what is inside first. Food waste and blue-bin recycling should not be taking up black-bin space.

Stafferton Way Household Waste and Recycling Centre

Use Stafferton Way for items that do not belong in your kerbside bins, especially extra waste, large items, hazardous materials and tricky recyclables.

Local tip: if you are clearing a Maidenhead, Windsor, Datchet, Eton, Ascot or Cookham property, split the load before travelling: reuse/donate usable items, book large items if needed, and take permitted household items to Stafferton Way.

Holiday changes, hot ash and hazardous waste

Bank holidays, bad weather and hazardous waste are the situations where normal bin assumptions often fail.

Situation RBWM detail Correct action
Bank holidays Collection dates can change during bank holidays. Check the holiday collection dates page and put bins out by 7am on the revised day.
Extra waste over holidays RBWM says only items placed inside bins will be collected. Take extra rubbish or recycling to Stafferton Way HWRC where suitable.
Bad weather / major events Collections are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. Check council updates before reporting as missed.
Hot ashes / BBQ / fireworks Never put anything hot in your bin, including fireworks, sparklers, bonfire or BBQ ashes and disposable BBQs. Let materials cool fully and follow hazardous waste guidance.
Hazardous waste Hazardous waste can harm residents, crews and processing staff. Use the correct hazardous/flammmable waste route rather than household bins.

RBWM Refuse Collection FAQs

How do I check my RBWM bin collection day?

Use the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead official bin collection day finder. It shows your recycling, food waste, rubbish and subscribed garden waste collection dates for your address.

What time should I put my bins out in RBWM?

Put your bins and food waste out by 7am on collection day, and no earlier than the night before. Place them at the front boundary of your property where crews can see them.

What should I do if my RBWM bin was missed?

Check the collection date, bank holiday changes, 7am rule, correct container, closed lid and contamination rules first. If it was genuinely missed, use RBWM’s official missed-bin report page.

Can I leave extra rubbish beside my black bin?

No. RBWM says it only collects household rubbish inside the bin with the lid closed. Rubbish that is overflowing, placed on top of the bin or beside the bin will not be collected.

How often is blue-bin recycling collected in RBWM?

RBWM blue-bin recycling is collected weekly. Put clean everyday food and drink packaging, paper, card, plastic bottles, cans, cartons and glass bottles or jars in the blue bin.

What should not go in the RBWM blue recycling bin?

Do not put batteries, clinical waste, food waste, nappies, wipes, bubble wrap, polystyrene, hard plastics, light bulbs, DIY waste, furniture, hot food containers or pet food packaging in the blue recycling bin.

How does RBWM food waste collection work?

Food waste is collected weekly. Line your indoor caddy or container with any plastic or paper bag, tie it when full, place it in the outdoor food bin, lock the handle and put it at the front boundary by 7am.

How does RBWM garden waste subscription work?

RBWM green garden waste subscription runs for one year from your first collection. Green bins are emptied once a fortnight, with bank holiday changes, and garden waste must be loose in the bin with the lid closed.

How much is RBWM large item collection?

RBWM large item collection fees from 1 April 2026 are £50 for one item, £57 for two, £65 for three, £72 for four and £80 for five items. Fridges and freezers are £55 per unit.

Can RBWM provide a larger black rubbish bin?

RBWM says it will only provide a larger black bin to households of six or more people, five or more with a baby under two in nappies, or households with a medical need that creates non-recyclable waste.

Final practical advice

For RBWM refuse collection, the winning routine is simple: check your exact address, put bins out by 7am, keep black rubbish inside the bin with the lid closed, use weekly food waste and blue-bin recycling, and keep hazardous/electrical items out of normal bins.

For anything outside normal collection, choose the right route: green garden waste subscription, large item collection, Stafferton Way HWRC, small electrical/battery recycling, textile collection, new bin request or official missed-bin report.
