Thurrock Bin Help Without Guesswork

Use this guide to check Thurrock Council bin days, understand Round A/Round B weeks, sort blue, green/grey, brown and food bins, report missed collections correctly, and choose bulky waste or Linford HWRC when bins are not enough.

It is made for scrolling: choose your problem, read the exact action, then open the official Thurrock Council link only when needed.

Quick answer: Thurrock Council collects green/grey refuse bins and blue recycling bins every 2 weeks on alternate Round A/Round B weeks. Brown garden waste bins are collected with blue-bin weeks if you subscribe. Food bins are collected every week.

Most important rule: put the correct waste at the approved collection point by 6am, use the right bin, keep the lid shut where applicable, avoid wrong items, and report a genuine missed collection before midnight on the second working day.

Check Thurrock bin days: Round A and Round B

Thurrock bin weeks are not only about the day of the week. You also need to know whether your street is Round A or Round B.

Question Thurrock answer What to do
How often is refuse collected? Green or grey wheeled bins are collected every 2 weeks. Check whether this week is your green/grey week.
How often is recycling collected? Blue wheeled bins are collected every 2 weeks, on alternate weeks to green/grey. Do not put blue recycling out on green/grey week.
What about brown garden waste? Subscribed brown bins are collected in the same weeks as blue bins. Put the brown bin out only if subscribed and stickered.
What about food bins? Food bins are collected every week. Put food bin out with your other bins on your usual collection day.
How do I find my round? Use Thurrock’s official collection page or street-name A to Z. Search road/postcode and save your Round A/B pattern.
What about public holidays? Thurrock publishes normal collection and public holiday updates on the collection page. Check the page before Christmas, New Year and bank holiday weeks.
Local tip: streets in Grays, Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, Corringham, Chafford Hundred, Purfleet and Aveley can be on different rounds. Always check your own street, not just the nearby area.

Which Thurrock bin should you use?

Use this quick container guide before reading the longer sorting tables.

♻️

Blue bin

Recyclable waste: paper, cardboard, aerosols, cans, cartons, plastic bottles, food trays, yoghurt pots, Tetra Pak, glass bottles and jars.

⬛

Green / grey bin

Non-recyclable waste, and food waste only if your household has not yet received a food bin.

🌿

Brown bin

Garden waste only, if you have subscribed and the brown bin has a valid property-specific permit sticker.

🍽️

Food bin

Food waste only. Tie liner bags and put them in the outdoor food recycling bin for weekly collection.

Missed bin decision tree

Thurrock’s missed-bin form is for correctly presented waste that was genuinely missed. Use this checklist first.

Was it the scheduled bin/round?
No → recheck your Round A/B week. Blue/brown and green/grey alternate.
Was it at the approved point by 6am?
No → it may not count as missed. Put it out correctly next scheduled collection.
Did the bin contain wrong waste?
Yes → remove wrong items. Tagged bins are collected next scheduled collection after you fix the problem.
Was there too much waste or lid open?
Yes → reduce the waste. Thurrock lists too much waste / lid not fully shut as a non-collection reason.
Was there a road or service problem?
Blocked roads, badly parked cars, traffic, tipping-site delays, snow, ice, flooding or vehicle breakdowns can cause missed rounds.
Still genuinely missed?
Report online before midnight on the second working day after collection was due. Valid reports are returned within 2 working days.
Useful detail: Thurrock collects more than 40,000 waste containers each morning and collections can happen at different times of the day. Do not report too early if crews may still be working.

Bin tags and stickers: what the colour means

A tag means the bin was not simply missed. You need to remove the problem before the next scheduled collection.

Tag / sticker Why Thurrock uses it Fix before next collection
Green tag on blue bin Blue recycling bin contains non-recyclable items. Remove clothes, hangers, crisp packets, crockery, kettles, food cartons, light bulbs, nappies, paint tins and plastic bags.
Yellow tag on brown bin Brown garden waste bin contains food waste or non-compostable items. Remove apple cores, clothes, crisp packets, fish bones, food cartons, light bulbs, nappies and plastic bags.
Orange tag on green/grey bin Refuse bin contains bulky or dangerous items. Remove batteries, blades, bricks, broken furniture, fire extinguishers, kettles, nitrous oxide, paint tins and syringes.
Red heavy-bin tag Bin is too heavy for crews to move safely. Remove heavy waste and use Linford HWRC or the correct disposal route.
Food bin tag Food bin contains material that cannot be treated in the food waste process. Remove cans, glass, liquids, packaging and anything that is not food waste.
Side-waste sticker Unpermitted side waste was left out. Use the allowed extra recycling rule only for blue-bin recycling, or use HWRC/bulky/specialist route.
Do not report tagged bins as missed: Thurrock says if a tagged bin contains wrong waste or is too heavy, remove the problem and it will be collected on your next scheduled collection day.

Blue bin recycling: accepted items and extra recycling

The blue bin is your main recycling container. Wrong items can contaminate a whole lorry load and increase disposal costs.

Put in blue bin Do not put in blue bin Helpful rule
Paper, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, loose shredded paper and envelopes. Plastic bags, plastic wrap or film. Keep paper and card dry where possible.
Phone directories, catalogues, cardboard and large flattened cardboard boxes. Polystyrene, toys, textiles, shoes, garden waste or food waste. Flatten large boxes and place next to the blue bin if full.
Aerosols, food tins, drink cans, cartons and Tetra Pak packaging. Light bulbs, Pyrex, Vision cookware, mirrors or liquids. Glass and sharp cans must go inside the blue bin, not in bags beside it.
Plastic bottles, plastic food trays and yoghurt pots. Dirty or food-filled containers. Empty and rinse to protect the load.
Glass bottles and jars only. Other glass types such as mirrors or Pyrex. Use the A to Z if you are not sure.
Extra blue-bin recycling rule: Thurrock collects extra recycling if your blue bin is out as usual, extra recycling is next to it, most extra items are in clear or white bags, large boxes are flattened, and glass/sharp cans stay inside the blue bin.

Green / grey refuse bin: last-resort household waste

The green or grey bin is for non-recyclable waste. It is not for bulky, dangerous, electrical or DIY waste.

Can go in green / grey bin Must not go in green / grey bin Better route
General refuse, plastic bags and polystyrene. Electrical items such as microwaves, toasters and hairdryers. Use Linford HWRC or the A to Z disposal route.
Pet waste, sanitary products and nappies. Fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, syringes or dangerous items. Use safe specialist disposal or HWRC staff guidance.
Light bulbs, but not fluorescent bulbs. Recyclable waste and textiles, including duvets and pillows. Use blue bin, doorstep collection, charity, reuse or HWRC.
Glassware such as Pyrex and mirrors. Garden waste, soil, mud, DIY rubble, bricks, plaster or tiles. Use brown bin subscription, Linford HWRC or bulky/specialist routes.
Food waste only if your food bin has not yet been delivered. Liquids, except bottled cooking oil. Use the food bin once delivered; use HWRC/A-Z for unusual liquids.
Dangerous-item warning: batteries, blades, paint tins, syringes, nitrous oxide and broken furniture can cause a green/grey bin tag and non-collection.

All solid food waste with packaging removed. Packaging of any kind, even if marked compostable or degradable. Keep the outdoor bin lid fully closed and handle upright to lock it shut.

Smell and fly tip: empty the kitchen caddy often, tie bags tightly, wash the caddy, keep the food bin lid locked, and avoid leaving food waste open in hot weather.

Brown garden waste subscription

Brown bin garden waste is a paid subscription service. It is not collected unless the brown bin shows a valid permit sticker for that property.

Garden waste point Thurrock 2026/27 detail User action
Subscription period From the 2 weeks beginning Wednesday 1 April 2026 to the 2 weeks ending Wednesday 31 March 2027. Subscribe before the period starts for best value.

Extra brown bins Each additional fortnightly brown-bin collection is £50. Add extra subscribed brown bins if one is not enough.
Collection week Brown bin is collected on the same day as your blue recycling bin. Do not put brown bin out on green/grey week.

Permit sticker Sticker and instructions are delivered within 10 working days after payment. Stick it to the brown bin exactly as instructed.
Property-specific sticker Each permit sticker is unique and valid only at the property where it is sent. Use the manage form if moving within the borough or needing changes.

Put in brown bin

  • Grass cuttings.
  • Prunings and leaves.
  • Cut flowers.
  • Clean straw or hay.
  • Branches under 10cm diameter.

Keep out of brown bin

  • Any kind of bag or sack, including compostable or biodegradable bags.
  • Plastic, soil, mud or plant pots.
  • Food waste, pet waste or nappies.
  • Glass, metal cans, textiles or shoes.
  • General refuse.
No subscription? Home composting and Linford HWRC are official alternatives. Thurrock also says an unwanted brown bin can be kept, taken to HWRC for recycling, or collected by the council through a request route.

Extra recycling, side waste and full bins

Thurrock allows extra recycling only in specific blue-bin situations. It does not collect ordinary side waste that should go in green/grey or brown bins.

Problem Allowed route Do not do this
Blue bin full Put blue bin out as usual and place extra recycling next to it in clear/white bags. Do not use black bags or mix in non-recyclable waste.
Large cardboard boxes Flatten and place next to the blue bin. Do not leave wet, food-stained or polystyrene-filled boxes.
Glass or sharp cans Put inside the blue bin, not in bags beside it. Do not leave sharp items loose for crews to handle.
Extra green/grey rubbish Use Linford HWRC, bulky waste, re-use, or A to Z disposal route. Do not leave bags beside the green/grey bin.
Extra garden waste Subscribe/add brown-bin capacity, home compost, or use Linford HWRC. Do not leave garden sacks beside brown bin unless your official service specifically allows it.
Textiles, shoes, small household items Use doorstep collection partnership, charity or re-use routes. Do not put reusable textiles in green/grey or blue bins.
Best space-saving move: use the food bin weekly and blue-bin recycling properly. That reduces pressure on green/grey refuse weeks.

Who can apply

You cannot leave bins at the front of your property due to disability or illness.

16+

Household check

No one in the household aged 16 or older is physically able to move wheeled bins to the front.

Assisted rule Official detail What it means
Collection location Thurrock can only collect bins from areas at the front of properties, such as front garden or outside front door. They cannot collect wheeled bins from back gardens, garages or sheds.
Service length If accepted, assisted collection is provided for up to 2 years unless circumstances change. Near the end, Thurrock writes to ask if you still need the service.
Changes Email waste@thurrock.gov.uk if circumstances change or the service is no longer needed. The council may end the service if incorrect information is found or changes are not reported.

Flats, communal bins and bag-only collections

Some Thurrock properties do not use the standard kerbside wheelie-bin setup. Check the service type before reporting or ordering containers.

Property type Thurrock detail Resident action
Flats / communal recycling Thurrock provides communal arrangements at many flats and is assessing properties for separate food waste. Use communal containers correctly and do not leave waste on landings, walkways or outside flats.
Bag-only collection property Bag-only properties have a separate collection schedule and can still use bulky waste and assisted collection if needed. Check the bag-only schedule and use blue sacks only if your property is eligible.
Communal bin area with bulky waste Booked bulky items left in a shared/communal external bin area must be clearly labelled. Label “Bulky Waste” plus your property number/name.
New food waste at flats Some properties are being assessed to provide communal separate food waste collection and greater waste storage capacity. Follow the instructions delivered to your building.
